Welcome to Alternate Whirls. This is as you may have guessed a site dedicated to Alternate Worlds, Alternate Universes, Parallel Universes, Parallel Worlds and Alternate History.

  Aren't they the same thing, you may ask. Well in many cases yes, but in some cases not exactly. An alternate Universe for example can be something as unique as one where no life ever evolved or where the planets are flat or where physics are so different that magic works and science does not

 Primarily it the site will deal with alternate history which I have a fairly broad interpretation. For example I consider a serious works of historical speculation such as For Want of a Nail by Robert Sobel as alternate history as well as many science fiction works set in a future that did not occur, An example would be Robert Heinlein's Future History series since many of the earlier stories were set in a seventies and eighties that did not come to pass.

 Many alternate history fans seem bothered by improbabilities such as having historical characters who probably would never had existed in the altered universe. I don't have this problem. While it is true that alternate history is based on historical events, it should never be forgotten that it is first and foremost fiction. Since it is fiction, the writer uses certain events and characters in making the point they wish to make.

 One of the main objects of  many alternate history fans is they love to tear apart the author's premise. Here is another point of contention that sets me apart from other  fans.  Like with all fiction I try to suspend my belief and involve myself in the world the author has created. My view is this, the author posits a theory of what happens if a certain event had occurred or not occurred and then it is their job to present as plausible a case as possible. The story proceeds with its own internal logic. Yet he must also entertain and so must be allowed a certain leeway in how events proceed. Alternate history is not history after all but historical fiction.
